14 Ways to Practice Self Love this Valentine’s Day

Today is all about love, right.  So in the spirit of Valentine’s Day I wanted to write a little post about self love and self care, as yes there are 14 tips for the 14th of February 😉

We can be our own worst critics and I definitely have gone through phases of truly being hard on myself.

It has been a tough journey, but a necessary one to truly find self love on all levels.

This list below in not all inclusive but I encourage you to try the ones that speak to you the most and start to change your inner dialogue to a more positive one.

1. Start Your Day on a Positive Note
Wake up and say loving things to yourself before even getting out of bed.  Think of your accomplishments, what you love about your body, all the wonderful things in your life.

Starting out with positive thoughts right away in the morning can truly change your whole day.

2. Stop Comparing
I repeat, stop comparing yourself to others.  This today’s world, with all the social media out there, it is SO hard to not get wrapped up in it.  But believe me, pictures online are not always what they seem.

I used to get so caught up in other people online who looked better than me, who lived in cooler places, who had more followers than me, whose life seemed perfect.  But again, what people post on social media is almost never what it seems.

What I had to do was detox myself from it all.  I stopped following other accounts that promoted “the picture perfect life” or really any other accounts at all.  I focused on me and the good things that I had to offer.  It has helped me be a lot more authentic too.

3. Nourish Your Body
Stop thinking of it as a diet and start thinking of it as fueling your body.  Eating healthy is one of the BEST forms of self love you can practice.

When you eat a healthy, balanced diet you feel better, have more energy and will naturally be a happier person.

Don’t worry about counting calories, just focus on whole foods and tons of fresh fruit and veggies!

4. Move Your Body
People who do some sort of physical activity daily note a consistently better mood.

“Exercise gives you endorphins.  Endorphins make you happy.”  – name that movie!

Find a form of exercise that you ENJOY to do (this is key) and make an effort to get it in every single day.  Even if for only 15 minutes, I guarantee you will feel the positive effects.

5. Cut Out Any Bad Relationships
Oh this one can be tricky, I know, but if happiness is important, doing this is important.

Anyone who doesn’t make you feel worthy, loved, special is NOT worth your time.  It really is that simple.  Take an inventory of the people you hang out with the most, do they lift you up or break you down?

6.  Surround Yourself with Love
Looking back at that inventory of friends, who does make you feel ALIVE?  Hang on to those bright lights and make an effort to see them more.

They always say you become like the 5 people you hang out with the most, chose wisely.

7.  Follow Your Heart
What is your PASSION in life?  Are you living that out each and every day?  If you are not, change it.

Maybe that means switching careers, maybe that means moving across the world, or becoming a Broadway Star.  Whatever it is that makes you TICK and feel alive, go do that.  Life is too short to not live out your passion every single day.

8. Watch Your Thoughts
What you think, you become, so be careful of what is going on in that pretty little head of yours.

Every time you catch yourself thinking anything but loving, positive thoughts about yourself, others, life in general, stop yourself and switch it around.

It may seem so small, but I promise this little exercise will make a huge difference.

9.  Love Thy Neighbor
Treat everyone you meet with love and respect.  One of my favorite quotes is “There isn’t a person you wouldn’t love if you could read their story.”

We can all be quick to judge, quick to anger.  But if show everyone kindness the world will be a much happier place.

10.  Be Grateful
There is so so much to be grateful for.  I used to be a culprit of the “grass is greener” mindset.  I always looked at others lives and wanted what they had, instead of being happy with my own.

I started a gratitude journal to help combat that.  Every day I will write a few things I am grateful for and really mean them.  Things like my relationship with my husband, the roof over my head, the food on my plate.

When I was feeling ho-hum about my desk job I would write about how grateful I am for a paycheck that pays our bills.

Shifting your mindset to think of all that you DO have, instead of all that you don’t will make every aspect of your life more fulfilling.

11. You Do Not Need Everyone’s Approval
One of the best quotes in the world, in my opinion is, “you can be the juiciest peach in the world, but there will still be someone who hates peaches.”

I am a (recovering) people pleaser.  I want everyone to like me and everyone to approve me.  I finally realized that other’s approval of me doesn’t change my life.

If someone doesn’t love me for me, they simply do not belong in my life.

12.  Say No More Often
If you are a people pleaser, you probably say YES all too often.  I feel you, I’ve been there.

But start only saying YES to things that you genuinely want to do.  You don’t HAVE to cook cupcakes for the bake sale, you don’t have to go to dinner with your “bad influence” friend.

Say no to things that don’t set your soul on fire, so that you have more time to do things that DO.

13.  It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint
Finding self love is a journey.  It is not going to happen over night.  Give yourself some grace.  Don’t beat yourself up if you find negative thoughts still cloud your mind and don’t get down on yourself for skipping the gym.

Just get up every day and vow to yourself that you will make an effort, each and every day, to lead a happier, more positive life.

This list may seem overwhelming, you don’t have to do all of them today.  Start with a couple and add in more as you can.

14.  Live Out Loud
Be yourself, follow your heart and don’t let anyone stand in your way.

You are beautiful, fierce and unstoppable.  Live your life OUT LOUD.

with love,
